This is a pretty strong theme that runs through a lot of Wood’s art: strange worlds and strange women.
Maybe strange isn’t the right word, but in a lot of his art which has a sci fi or fantasy theme, you can see this treatment of women as a kind of unknown entity; something that combines attraction, fetishism, and danger. And that is what’s interesting about some of Wood’s women; sometimes they’re there for eye candy; but other times there is something just beneath the surface which is dark and threatening and dangerous.
We definitely are seeing that darkness and danger in this image; the female form here is being treated with caution; the male figure in the foreground is approaching with trepidation; restraint. Can you really trust that pretty face?
Then again maybe it’s the giant lizard that’s the problem.
